UTCC: Exports to grow 6.8-13.7%

there is strong possibility that the countryโs exports would expand by between 6.8 per cent and 13.7 per cent this year, the international trade studies centre at the university of the thai chamber of commerce (utcc) said on tuesday.
director ath pisalvanich said export value for 2012 is projected at us$243 billion to $559 billion.
this projection was based on the hypothesis that the us economy would grow by 1.99 per cent, 0.18 per cent for the european community and 3.38 per cent for the global economy.
however, export expansion could be minus 3.13 per cent and 4.58 per cent, a record low in three years, if the us economic growth figures were minus between 1.18 per cent and 0.98 per cent, minus 2.32 per cent and 1.28 per cent in europe and the global economy grew by between only 0.78 per cent and 1.38 per cent, he said.
mr ath said 2011 exports went up by only 16.9 per cent as the figure was down to minus 6.8 per cent in the fourth quarter, due to the great floods.
thai goods with high potential to be exported more this year included automobiles and auto-parts, natural rubber, plastic pellets and chemical products, he added.
he said the risk factors that could derail export expansion this year were the global economic slowdown, caused by the debt crisis in europe, the government’s policy to float prices of lpg used by the industry sector to allow it to move in line with market mechanism and to increase daily minimum wage of workers to 300 baht.
these would relatively reduce trade competitiveness of thai manufacturers, he added.

Consumer confidence rises in December
วันที่ 2012-01-12 12:20:00 โดย BangkokPost - 10.5309295654297
the consumer confidence index on the overall economy went up to 63.1 in december, from 61.0 reported in november, the economic and business forecasting centre at the university of the thai chamber of commerce said on thursday.
consumer confidence in job opportunity for the month stood at 64.2, and at 92.1 on future income, according to the centre.
all confidence indices in december of last year increased for the first time in five months because the floodwaters had receded and consumers believed the measures to rehabilitate flood affected areas and to rebuild the country would help the economy to grow by between four and five per cent this year, it said.
positive factors that boosted consumer confidence were the government’s measures to assist flood victims, the report of a us$200 million trade surplus in november, the decline in domestic retail prices of fuel, and the continuing improvement in the flood situation.
the negative factors included the lowering of the economic growth projection for 2011 by the ministry of finance, the national economic and social development board and the bank of thailand, people’s concerns about the fragile state of global economic recovery, particularly the debt crisis in europe and weakening of the thai currency, the centre said.

BBL: 2012 GDP growth 5%
วันที่ 2012-01-31 14:17:00 โดย BangkokPost - 8.08616638183594
gross domestic product growth for 2012 is expected to be five per cent, korbsak phutrakul, an executive vice-president with bangkok bank, said on tuesday.
mr korbsak said the economy would continue to expand this year and if there is no political problem it could grow by five per cent, from only 1.8 per cent last year.
economic expansion would be mobilsed by spending by the private sector and the government’s investment in projects to rebuild the country in the first half of the year.
growth in the second half of the year would be mainly boosted by government spending and foreign investors, particularly the government’s water management and infrastructure reconstruction megaprojects, said mr korbsak.
major risk factors that could derail economic growth this year included the fragile us economy, the debt crisis in europe and fluctuations in the currency exchange rate, he said.
